The very first thing you need to do is to see your GP to make sure that it is truly a fungal infection you are dealing with before any treatment starts. A lot of other disorders such as Psoriasis and contact dermatitis can result in nail problems that look exactly like nail fungus, so you need your doctor to verify if it is indeed a fungal infection.

The moment you are sure that it's actually a fungal infection, your health specialist will advise you on a particular course of treatment, based on how advanced the infection is, your current lifestyle and how drastic the measures you are ready to take. Another consideration could be budget issues

Oral prescriptions
Most doctors will usually first attempt to treat you to with a form oral anti-fungal prescription i.e. pills. By far the most likely thing will be either griseofulvin, or fluconazole, both of which have been used for lots of years and are proven safe and mostly effective. The only problem is they only work against some types of fungus, so their efficiency is sort of limited. Fluconazole also requires a very long treatment period, sometimes up to 9 months.

Alternative or “natural” treatments
For people who prefer so-called natural methods, there are also a variety of treatments and remedies, though you should know that these options are generally recognized by doctors and other specialists. A little research will introduce you to the world of alternative treatments like Tea Tree Oil, soaking ones nails in vinegar, lemon juice, and certain bleach solutions.

Tea tree oil
Tea tree oil is a potent natural antiseptic and fungicide that will help fight your fungus. Apply undiluted tea tree oil with olive oil to the affected toe nail. Alternatively you can put few drops of tea tree oil on toenails and rub it thoroughly every day.

Listerine mouthwash
Soak your toes in Listerine mouthwash. The powerful antiseptic leaves your toe nails looking healthy.

Natural Apple Cider Vinegar
Soak your toenails for 15 - 20 minutes in basin full of warm water and natural apple cider vinegar mixed in equal proportion. When done, dry your toenails thoroughly. Use a hair dryer on warm setting to absorb all the moisture in and around the toes

Oregano and Olive oil
Blend 2 drops of Oregano essential oil with a tsp of olive oil. Apply this mixture on the affected area daily for NOT more than three weeks. Oregano essential oil has antiseptic, antibacterial, anti-parasitical, antiviral, analgesic and anti-fungal properties

Surgery
The most drastic solution for nail fungus infection is probably surgery, but most doctors are reluctant to prescribe it because it is quite painful could disfigure permanently. Still, if the infection is resistant to medications, or if prescription medications are not possible for you, surgery might be the last resort.

At the end, the important thing to remember is that whatever treatment method you chose, it most likely will take some months to eradicate the fungus but with the right treatment, you should be able to get rid of even the most severe nail fungus infections.
